Scope

This document is applicable to external series gap metal oxide arresters (hereinafter referred to as external series gap line arresters, EGLA) used in overhead transmission and distribution lines with voltages above 1 kV, which are solely designed to protect the line insulation (including insulators and air gaps) from lightning-induced flashover or breakdown. Since the metal oxide resistors of EGLA are connected to the line via an external series gap, the following issues will not be considered in this document: - Operating impulse discharge voltage; - Steep wave and operating impulse residual voltage; - Thermal stability; - Long-duration current impulse withstand; - Time characteristics of the arresters' withstand voltage under power frequency; - Disconnecting device test; - Aging caused by power frequency voltage. For EGLAs with integrated design of the arresters and gaps, which cannot be disassembled, the performance requirements and test methods of the external series gap metal oxide arresters are not considered in this document, and this document is therefore not applicable to such arresters. With the consent of both the supplier and the purchaser, the technical requirements for such arresters shall refer to some parts of this document, but additional consideration shall also be given to the content of this document that is not assessed for the performance of such arresters.
