Scope

This document specifies the requirements and specific guidelines for the safe operation and maintenance of fiber optic communication systems (OFCS). In OFCS, light may reach beyond the range of the transmitting device and/or extend to locations far from the light source.
This document requires an assessment of the hazard level of each accessible location in OFCS, rather than product classification according to IEC 60825-1. This document applies to engineered end-to-end assemblies installed in OFCS, used for transmitting, transferring, and receiving optical radiation generated by lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), or optical amplifiers, for the purpose of communication or control via fiber optic transmission.
