Scope

This document describes the test method for assessing the oxidation stability of polyethylene-ultra-high molecular weight (PE-UHMW) materials used in surgical implants during processing and sterilization.
This document describes a method for accelerated aging of PE-UHMW samples and components of total joint prostheses. PE-UHMW is aged under high temperatures and high oxygen pressures to accelerate the oxidation of the material, thereby enabling the evaluation of its potential long-term chemical and mechanical stability.
