Basic Information
Scope
This document defines the commonly used terms for vanilla.
This document applies to the production, scientific research, teaching, and trade of the following vanilla plants:
a) Vanilla fragrans Ames, syn. Vanilla planifolia Andrews, and vanilla varieties with different names in commercial trade due to their geographical origins in regions such as Borneo, Indonesia, and Mexico;
b) Vanilla tahitensis J.W. Moore;
c) products obtained from hybrid seeds of Vanilla fragrans Ames.
This document does not apply to the production, scientific research, teaching, and trade of other vanilla plants (Vanilla pom pona schiede). The equivalent French terms for the terms in this document are listed in Appendix A.
Note 1: "Borneo" refers to Vanilla fragrans Ames produced in Comoros, Reunion, Madagascar, and Mauritius.
Note 2: Other major vanilla-producing countries are (in alphabetical order) China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Uganda.
