Scope

This series of standards applies to the operation and installation of electrical equipment and systems in harsh outdoor conditions (including open-pit mines, quarries, stockyards, and similar locations), particularly for the following electrical equipment and systems: a) Mining, stacking, and primary processing machinery; b) Secondary processing machinery; c) Conveyor systems; d) Drainage and water supply systems; e) Mobile railway systems; f) Fixed railway systems (operational only); g) Electric trucks; h) Power generation and distribution equipment; i) Control, monitoring, signaling, and communication systems; j) Auxiliary equipment. This series of standards does not apply to temporary or ad hoc outdoor work sites, such as construction and earth-moving sites, unless the equipment used is similar to surface mining equipment. The purpose of this series of standards is to provide guidelines for the installation and operation of electrical equipment and systems to ensure the safety of people, livestock, and equipment, as well as the normal operation of the equipment.
