Scope

This document specifies the data link layer services that meet the UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) requirements of the vehicle K-line communication system as defined in ISO 14230-1. This document is defined based on the diagnostic services established in ISO 14229-1 and ISO 15031-5, but it is not limited to use with them. It is also compatible with most other communication needs of the in-vehicle network. The protocol specifies unacknowledged communication.
The K-line-based diagnostic communication protocol supports the standard service primitive interface specified in ISO 14229-2.
This document defines the data link layer services to support different application layer implementations, as follows:
——Enhanced vehicle diagnostics (diagnostics of emission-related systems beyond statutory functions, and diagnostics of non-emission-related systems);
——Emission-related OBD specified in ISO 15031, SAE J1979-DA, and SAE J2012-DA;
——Additionally, this document clarifies the initialization differences of the K-line protocol defined in ISO 9141 and ISO 14230. This is very important because the server only supports one of the aforementioned protocols, and the client should handle the coexistence of all protocols during the protocol determination process.
