Scope

This section specifies the determination of the purity and hydrocarbon impurities of industrial styrene by gas chromatography.
This section is applicable to the determination of styrene with a purity (mass fraction) of not less than 99% and a hydrocarbon impurity concentration (mass fraction) ranging from (0.001 to 1.000)%. Typical hydrocarbon impurities include: ethylbenzene, p-xylene, m-xylene, o-xylene, isopropylbenzene, n-propylbenzene, meta-ethylbenzene, para-ethylbenzene, α-methylstyrene, benzyne, meta-methylstyrene, and para-methylstyrene.
Although this method can also be applied to styrene samples with lower purity, the qualitative determination of all impurities and the selection of suitable internal standards may be more difficult.

Note: Styrene is flammable. It will undergo an exothermic polymerization reaction when in contact with peroxides, inorganic acids, and aluminum trichloride. High concentrations of liquid styrene and its vapors are irritating to the eyes and respiratory system.
