Basic Information
Scope
The main purpose of this document is to serve as a safety standard for products mentioned in its scope, but it is also applicable to documents developed by technical committees based on the principles stipulated in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51 for products similar to those mentioned in this document.
This document specifies general safety requirements for electrical equipment and its accessories intended for the following types of use, regardless of their location.
a) Electrical test and measurement equipment
This refers to equipment that tests, measures, indicates, or records one or more electrical or physical parameters using electromagnetic methods, as well as non-measurement equipment such as signal generators, measurement standards, laboratory power supplies, transducers, and transmitters.
Note 1: This includes desktop power supplies intended for assisting in the testing or measurement of another device. Power supplies intended for supplying power to equipment are covered by IEC 61558 [see 1.1.2h)].
This document is also applicable to test equipment integrated into manufacturing processes and intended for testing manufacturing equipment.
Note 2: In this application, manufacturing test equipment may be installed adjacent to or interconnected with industrial machines.
b) Electrical industrial process control equipment
This refers to equipment that controls one or more output quantities to specific values, each of which is set manually, programmed locally or remotely, or determined by one or more input variables.
c) Electrical laboratory equipment
This refers to equipment used for measuring, indicating, monitoring, inspecting, or analyzing substances, or for preparing materials, including in vitro diagnostic (IVD) equipment.
Such equipment is also used outside laboratories, such as IVD equipment for self-checking used at home and inspection equipment used to check people or materials duri
