本文件规定了与测功器连接的往复式内燃机气体和颗粒排放物的试验循环、试验程序和评定。在某些限定条件下，本文件也能用于现场测量。试验在稳态和瞬态工况下采用代表规定用途的试验循环进行。
本文件适用于移动、运输和固定用往复式内燃机，如土方机械、发电机组及其他用途的非道路用发动机，但不包括运输乘客和货物的道路用发动机。对于有其他附加要求（如职业卫生和安全条例、电厂规程）的机械设备用发动机，补充附加的试验条件和特殊的评定方法。
