Scope

1.1 This standard is one of a series of standards related to the sampling and testing of paints, varnishes, and related products. This standard specifies a test method for determining the resistance of a single layer or composite coating system of paints, varnishes, or related products to scribing by a hemispherical stylus under standard conditions. For composite coating systems, the stylus can penetrate either to the substrate or to the intermediate coating layer. 1.2 This method is intended to be applied in the following aspects: a) As a "pass/fail" test, i.e., the test is conducted by applying a specified load to the stylus to evaluate whether the coating meets specific requirements; b) By applying a gradually increasing load to the stylus to determine the minimum load required to penetrate the coating.
