Scope

This document specifies the requirements and related planning activities for the production, operation, service, and scrapping of vehicles.
This document applies to safety-related systems that include one or more electrical/electronic systems installed on mass-produced road vehicles, except for light motorcycles.
This document does not apply to specific electrical/electronic systems on special-purpose vehicles, such as vehicle systems designed for disabled drivers.
Note: Other dedicated safety standards can be used as supplements to this document, and vice versa.
Systems and their components that have already completed production and release, or systems and their components that are being developed before the date of this document's release, do not apply to this document. When changes are made to systems and their components that have completed production and release before the date of this document's release, this document tailors the safety lifecycle activities based on these changes. When integrating systems not developed in accordance with this document with systems developed in accordance with this document, the safety lifecycle activities must be tailored in accordance with this document.
This document addresses potential hazards caused by the abnormal functioning of safety-related electrical/electronic systems, including potential hazards caused by the interaction of these systems. This document does not address hazards related to electric shocks, fires, smoke, heat, radiation, toxicity, flammability, reactivity, corrosion, energy release, etc., unless the hazards are directly caused by the abnormal functioning of safety-related electrical/electronic systems.
