Scope
This document specifies the selection of monitoring variables for anticipated operational events, design basis accidents, and severe accidents in nuclear power plants, as well as the design, performance, qualification, and display criteria for accident monitoring instruments. It also provides guidance for the use of portable instruments.
This document applies to the design of new nuclear power plants and the modification of existing nuclear power plants. It applies to the function and design of accident monitoring instruments used during the following operations:
—— Planned operations for accident mitigation as required;
—— Evaluation of plant operating conditions and safety system performance, as well as decisions made in response to abnormal events in the plant;
—— Operations to achieve and maintain a safe shutdown of the plant in the event of an accident.
This document does not apply to the following cases:
—— Accident monitoring instruments used solely for historical record or maintenance purposes;
—— Other instruments that may be used under accident conditions;
—— Monitoring instruments for design-extended conditions other than severe accidents.
