Scope

This document specifies the requirements for permanent and temporary laser protective screens used in the working area of enclosed laser processing machines (such as during maintenance and repair), as well as the technical requirements for dedicated laser protective screens.
This document applies to all components of laser protective screens, including transparent (visible transmission) screens and observation windows, baffles, laser protective curtains, and protective walls.
This document also clarifies:
a) how to evaluate and standardize the protective performance of laser protective screens; and
b) how to select laser protective screens.
Note: Requirements for optical path components, beam terminators, and other parts of protective shields that are not enclosed in the processing area of laser products are included in IEC 60825-1.
Appendix A of this document provides general guidelines for the design and selection of laser protective screens, Appendix B presents the evaluation of expected irradiance limits (FEL), Appendix C provides a detailed explanation of term definitions, Appendix D specifies the inspection of dedicated laser protective screens, Appendix E provides guidelines for the placement and installation of laser protective screens, Appendix F provides guidelines for the evaluation of the suitability of laser protective screens, and Appendix G specifies the light guide transmission system.
This document only addresses the protection against laser radiation, and does not cover the potential secondary radiation hazards that may arise during material processing.
