Scope

This document specifies the method for screening and analyzing polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dicyclohexyl phthalate (DNOP), di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), and di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) in polymers of electronic and electrical products using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/TD-GC-MS) with thermal desorption/thermal cracking (Py/TD).
The method has been validated using polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials containing decabromodiphenyl ether (100 mg/kg to 1,000 mg/kg) and the aforementioned individual phthalates (100 mg/kg to 4,000 mg/kg), as shown in Appendix J. The method described in this document has not been specifically validated for PBBs (from monobrominated to decabrominated), PBDEs (from monobrominated to decabrominated), phthalates, or concentrations outside the specified ranges in other types of polymers.
