Scope
This part applies to electrical appliances that protect against indirect lightning and direct lightning effects or other transient overvoltage surges. These appliances are assembled and connected to circuits and equipment with an AC rated voltage of no more than 1,000 V (effective value) and 50/60 Hz, or a DC voltage of no more than 1,500 V.
This part specifies the characteristics, standard test methods, and rated values of these appliances, which include at least one non-linear component used to limit voltage and discharge surge currents.
