Scope

This document specifies the terms, definitions, and symbols for the design and selection of general components of closed gear transmission devices, design and calculation conditions, shafts, keyed and keyless interference-fit connections, bearings, threaded fasteners, housings, overclutches, locking discs, couplings, lubrication, and the design and selection of other components.
This document is applicable to the design and selection of general components of closed gear transmission devices such as straight gears, helical gears, herringbone gears, bevel gears, and worm gears.
The formulas and values in this document are applicable to the design and selection of general components of closed gear transmission devices in conventional industries. When higher design accuracy is required, design deviations can be corrected based on experience, through testing, and more professional analysis. This document is suitable for experienced designers, who can select appropriate values and understand the influence of the following factors: lubrication, deformation, manufacturing errors, material heat treatment, residual stress, and system vibration.
There are dedicated standards for the design of gear and worm components, and these are not repeated in this document.
This document is not applicable to transmission devices subject to vibration conditions that may lead to unpredictable fatigue failure.
