Scope

This document specifies the usage conditions, rated values, design and structure, testing, transportation, storage, installation, operation and maintenance rules, as well as safety and environmental aspects of surge arresters used in high-voltage AC circuit breakers.
This document applies to surge arresters connected in parallel with the circuit breaker's breakpoint. Their function is to improve the voltage distribution at both ends of each arc-extinguishing chamber unit of a multi-breakpoint circuit breaker.
Surge arresters can also be used in parallel with the arc-extinguishing chamber units of single-breakpoint circuit breakers to suppress transient recovery voltage (TRV).
Surge arresters are components of circuit breakers and should comply with the technical requirements of circuit breakers.
This document applies to surge arresters that meet one or both of the following categories:
——Installed on air-insulated circuit breakers;
——Installed on enclosed circuit breakers.
The testing of the above different types of surge arresters is different in some cases.
The purpose of this document is to:
——Specify unified rules for performance, testing and rated values;
——Specify specific safety rules;
——Provide installation and operation guidelines.
This document does not apply to relative ground capacitors installed on circuit breakers to suppress transient recovery voltage.
