Scope

This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transportation, storage, and shelf life of carrageenan.
This standard applies to mixtures of three basic types of carrageenan (Κ, Iota, and Lambda) extracted and processed from red algae (Rhodophyceae) using water or alkali solutions. Commercial carrageenan may contain sugars used for standardization purposes, salts used for special gelling or thickening effects, or emulsifiers introduced during the drying process.
