Scope

This document specifies the design, manufacturing, and testing requirements for electrically sensitive protective devices (ESPEs) that use vision-based protection devices (VBPDs) as sensitive functions, and also sets out the general requirements for the design, manufacture, and testing of non-contact ESPEs specifically used to detect humans as components of safety-related systems. ESPEs include optional safety-related functions (given in Appendix A). It is limited to the functions of ESPEs and their mechanical connection methods. This document applies to ESPEs used for the following purposes: -- Do not require human intervention for detection; -- Detect objects entering or existing within the detection area. This document does not apply to: -- VBPDs using radiation wavelengths exceeding 400 nm to 1,500 nm. This document does not address: -- The size or configuration of the detection area and its configuration related to the dangerous components of any specific application; -- Any mechanical hazardous states; -- Requirements for complex classification or differentiation of the objects being detected; -- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) emission requirements. This document may be relevant to applications other than protecting personnel, such as protecting machinery or products from mechanical damage. In these applications, additional requirements may be necessary, for example, when the materials identified by the sensitive function have properties different from those of humans.
